Climate Overview

Bolivia's climate varies dramatically by altitude, creating distinct zones from frozen Andean peaks to tropical Amazon lowlands. The Altiplano and highlands (La Paz, Potosí, Uyuni) experience a dry season May-October with cold nights and sunny days, and a rainy season November-April with afternoon showers. Sucre has a pleasant subtropical climate year-round due to its moderate elevation of 2,800m. Santa Cruz and the Amazon lowlands are warm and humid throughout the year.

Sep-Nov

Transitional season with drying trails, mild temperatures, and the Bolivian springtime around September-October. Flower blooms appear at lower altitudes.

Oruro Carnival

Bolivia's biggest festival with 20,000 dancers in elaborate costumes performing traditional dances. UNESCO Masterpiece blending Catholic and indigenous traditions. Book accommodations months ahead.

Alasitas Festival

La Paz festival where miniature versions of desired items are purchased and blessed by Ekeko (god of abundance) hoping to receive real version. Huge market selling tiny houses, cars, diplomas, money.

Late May/early June
Gran Poder Festival

Massive La Paz festival with folkloric dances, elaborate costumes, and street parties. Rivals Oruro in scale. Entire city celebrates for three days.

August 14-16
Fiesta de la Virgen de Urkupiña

Major pilgrimage to Quillacollo near Cochabamba. Thousands gather to honor Virgin Mary with dances, music, and rock-chipping for luck. Bolivia's second-biggest festival.

November 2
Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

Families visit cemeteries bringing flowers, food, and music to honor deceased. T'antawawas (bread babies) baked and shared. Beautiful celebration of life and death.

April-May (biennial in even years)
International Baroque Music Festival

World-class classical music performed in stunning Jesuit mission churches in eastern Bolivia. Unique cultural event in UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Independence Day

National holiday with parades, festivities, and celebrations across Bolivia. Sucre has largest celebrations as constitutional capital.
