The Markt is the central square of Bruges in the Flemish Region of Belgium and the natural starting point for the UNESCO-listed historic centre. The wide cobbled space is framed by stepped-gable guild houses, cafe terraces and the Provincial Court, while the Belfry rises on the south side. At the middle stands the bronze monument to Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, the leaders of the 1302 uprising against the French.

Medieval market square ringed by guild houses, the heart of the UNESCO-listed historic centre.

Visitors mostly come to walk, sit and take in the architecture rather than to tick off a single sight, and a loop of one to two hours covers the square and its immediate lanes. From the Markt, short walks lead to the Burg with its Gothic town hall, to the canal quays at Rozenhoedkaai, and to the Huidenvettersplein fish market area. The best photographs of the stepped gables are taken from the north-east corner of the square in the morning light, when the facades are lit and the square is nearly empty. Crowds peak between about 10:00 and 17:00, particularly in July, August and the Christmas market period, when the square holds a skating rink and market stalls. Horse-drawn carriages wait at the edge of the Markt, and their route passes through the surrounding streets. Early morning before 9:00 and the evening after 18:00 give the quietest and most atmospheric experience, with the lit Belfry as a backdrop. The square is open at all times and free to enter, though cafe prices around the Markt are noticeably higher than those on side streets. Brugge station is about 15 minutes away on foot via the Zilverpand and Steenstraat shopping streets, and the centre is largely pedestrianised, which makes it easy to continue from the Markt to the Begijnhof, the canals and the museums on foot.
