Bosland, near Hechtel-Eksel in the province of Limburg in the Flemish Region of Belgium, is one of the main mountain biking areas in the Kempen, a landscape of pine forest, heath and sandy soil. Marked mountain bike loops of roughly 15 to 60 km cross the Bosland estate and the neighbouring Hoge Kempen National Park, offering a range of grades from easy forest tracks suitable for beginners to more technical sections with roots, sand and short climbs. Routes are colour-coded and signposted, with information boards at trailheads, and riders can combine loops to match their fitness and the time available; typical outings last two to five hours. The terrain is much flatter than in the Ardennes, but the soft sand is tiring, particularly in dry weather, so moderate fitness is advisable for the longer loops. The sport is open to riders of most ages who can handle a bike off-road, with younger children better suited to the easiest loops. Riders bring a mountain bike, a helmet, water, snacks and a basic repair kit with a spare tube and pump; bikes can be rented in the Bosland area and at several visitor centres, and electric mountain bikes are available. The routes are public and shared with walkers and sometimes riders on horseback, so cyclists give way, keep speed down at junctions and follow the signs. There is no organised rescue on the trails, so riders should carry a phone, tell someone their route and call 112 in an emergency. In the Hoge Kempen National Park, cyclists must stay on authorised paths to protect heath and wildlife. The best months are April to October; spring and early autumn have the best trail conditions, while summer brings the heat and drier, looser sand. Heavy rain makes some forest tracks muddy, and winter riding is possible but cold. Prices of about EUR 15-30 apply to bike rental. Hunting seasons may affect some areas, so notices at trailheads should be read.
