The Flanders Fields cycle routes start from the Grote Markt in Ypres (Ieper), in West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, and link the cemeteries, memorials, museums and preserved battlefield sites of the First World War across the Westhoek. The area was the scene of some of the most intense fighting of the war, and today the flat countryside is dotted with more than a hundred Commonwealth war cemeteries, the Menin Gate in Ypres, the In Flanders Fields Museum in the Cloth Hall, and Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world. Signposted routes of 40 to 120 km follow quiet lanes and cycle paths, and shorter sections can be combined so that the ride suits the available time. Most routes take between three and seven hours. The terrain is largely flat, so the ride suits riders of moderate fitness, including families with older children, although the longer distances and the headwinds common in the open polder landscape make the full routes tiring. Bikes can be rented in Ypres, and electric bikes are available. Riders bring a helmet, a rain jacket, water and a map or the numbered-node route app. Local tourist offices provide maps and advice, while battlefield guides can be hired for a more detailed interpretation. Roads are shared with traffic, and some crossings of busy roads need care; cemeteries and memorials are places of remembrance, so visitors are asked to behave respectfully, keep voices low and avoid cycling inside the cemetery grounds. Unexploded shells are still found in farmland, and visitors should stay on the paths and never touch any metal object. The best time is April to October, when days are long and the weather mild; the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate is held every evening at 8 pm and is a moving end to a day's ride. Wet, windy days make the polder roads tiring, and winter rides are cold. Bike rental costs roughly EUR 15-25 per day.
