Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, a megacity of roughly 10 million people in the city and more than 20 million in the metro area on the Buriganga River. It combines Mughal and colonial monuments, the crowded lanes of Old Dhaka, Louis Kahn's parliament building and some of South Asia's best biryani and street food.
Dhaka's nightlife is shaped by a Muslim-majority culture and strict alcohol licensing, so there is no conventional club scene for visitors. The evening economy instead revolves around late-night tea and street food (Dhanmondi Lake, Hatirjheel, Old Dhaka), cafes and rooftop lounges in Gulshan and Banani, cultural evenings at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Dhanmondi arts venues, and a small number of licensed hotel bars where foreigners are served on showing a passport. Most restaurants and cafes close by 11PM to midnight; the city is safest and liveliest until about 10-11PM, and evenings are dramatically busier during Ramadan after iftar.
