Dhaka's most historic green space: shaded rain-tree avenues and a lake at Ramna Park, connected to the open lawns and memorials of Suhrawardy Udyan a short walk away.
Ramna Park dates back to the Mughal and Nawabi periods and was redesigned in the early 20th century; today it is a central green lung with a lake, tree-lined loops and popular morning walker groups. A circuit of the park is roughly 2-3km. Suhrawardy Udyan lies immediately to the south-west, a large landscaped ground with a memorial, wide lawns and shaded paths, and it is where the 7 March 1971 speech is remembered. Combining the two gives a 3-5km walk that also passes the Shahbag intersection, Dhaka University's Curzon Hall and the National Museum area. Entry to Ramna Park is normally a small ticket, and opening hours vary; visitors should check at the gate. The paths are paved or packed earth and flat. Mornings from 5:30 to 8:00 are the liveliest and best for walking; the park is hot and humid at mid-day. Tea stalls and vendors are common at the edges, and touts may approach foreign visitors.
