Capital Governorate is the heart of Bahrain: Manama's old souq and Bab Al Bahrain, the National Museum and Al Fateh Grand Mosque, the Adliya dining district and the waterfront towers of Bahrain Bay sit within a short taxi ride of each other.
Best photo spots
Iconic and lesser-known locations worth shooting.
Bahrain Bay Skyline from the Park Bridge
Best time: About 30 minutes before sunset to 40 minutes after, when the towers light up
Tip: Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset to secure a spot at the edge of the bridge deck. · Use a tripod with a remote or two-second timer, since the span flexes when people walk past. · Start with a polarising filter for water glare, then remove it once the lights come on. · A 16-35 mm lens covers the whole skyline; add a short telephoto for tower details. · Bring water in summer; the park is exposed and humid after sunset.
Bahrain World Trade Center
Best time: Blue hour, 20-40 minutes after sunset, when the sky-bridge turbines and tower lights show
Tip: Shoot 20 to 40 minutes after sunset so the sky holds colour while the tower lights are on. · Use a 16-35 mm lens and keep the camera level to limit converging verticals. · Choose a pavement position well away from the road edge and building entrances. · Use a tripod with a remote release for exposures of several seconds. · A longer focal length from a distance gives a more natural view of the sails.
Bahrain Financial Harbour and King Faisal Corniche
Best time: Sunset and blue hour; early morning for empty promenade shots
Tip: Arrive about 40 minutes before sunset to choose a tripod position at the edge of the path. · Use a 24-70 mm zoom to switch between wide skyline frames and facade details. · Fit a polarising filter for glare on glass and water, then remove it at blue hour. · Visit early on a weekday morning for a nearly empty promenade. · Keep tripods away from private plazas and entrances around the Financial Harbour.
Bab Al Bahrain
Best time: Early morning for few people; late afternoon for warm light on the arch
Tip: Shoot early in the morning for fewer people and cooler conditions. · Use a 16-35 mm lens and keep the camera level to limit converging lines. · Wait for gaps in the traffic and pedestrian flow rather than editing out people later. · Avoid photographing officials or security points around the government buildings. · Cafes and facilities in the souq behind the arch are the nearest restroom and water option.
Manama Souq Lanes
Best time: Morning 09:00-11:00 or late afternoon; many shops close midday
Tip: Visit between 09:00 and 11:00 for good light and calm lanes; many shops close at midday. · Use a 35 mm or 50 mm prime at a wide aperture instead of flash. · Ask permission before photographing people at close range and respect a refusal. · Leave the tripod behind; the lanes are narrow and a tripod would block foot traffic. · Keep bags small and carry water, especially from May to September.
Al Fateh Grand Mosque
Best time: Mid-morning for soft light on the dome; check the visiting times posted at the entrance
Tip: Check the visiting times posted at the entrance and avoid prayer times. · Dress modestly; women should cover their hair, and shoes come off inside. · Use a 16-35 mm lens handheld; tripods are not recommended. · Ask before photographing people and follow any signs on interior photography. · Use a polariser outdoors in strong sun to deepen the sky against the pale stone.
Bahrain National Museum Waterfront
Best time: Sunrise and the hour after, with the sun behind the photographer looking towards the causeway
Tip: Arrive 15 minutes before sunrise to catch the colour change in the sky. · Use a 24-70 mm zoom and a polariser to deepen the sky and cut water glare. · Keep the tripod clear of the walkway used by joggers and walkers. · Avoid photographing officials or security installations in the nearby Diplomatic Area. · Bring water; facilities outside the museum are limited.
Adliya Block 338 Street Scenes
Best time: Late afternoon to evening when cafes and gallery lights come on
Tip: Arrive in late afternoon on a weekday for calmer pavements and good light. · Use a 35 mm or 50 mm prime at a wide aperture for handheld evening shots. · Ask before photographing people at close range, especially diners. · Leave the tripod behind; pavements are narrow and busy in the evening. · Use cafes along the streets for restrooms and water.

Photography tips
Make your shots stand out.
Ask permission before photographing people, especially women and worshippers.
Do not photograph military, police, embassy or government buildings.
Carry a lens cloth: lenses fog when moving from air conditioning to outdoor humidity in summer.
Check the visiting times posted at Al Fateh Grand Mosque before planning an interior shoot.
