Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Azerbaijan.

1

Highland Park (ลžษ™hidlษ™r Xiyabanฤฑ)

๐Ÿ“ธ Blue hour (30 min after sunset)Cityscape/Architecture

The hilltop park above the Old City provides the classic Baku skyline shot with Flame Towers in the center, the historic Old City below, and the Caspian stretching to the horizon. The LED tower light show at blue hour creates the most dramatic images.

Photo tip: Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to get a good position on the viewing terrace. The towers light up fully around 30 minutes after sunset.
2

Heydar Aliyev Center

๐Ÿ“ธ Late afternoon golden hourArchitecture

Zaha Hadid's extraordinary flowing white curves create endless compositional possibilities. Walk the full perimeter to find different angles โ€” the entry ramp, the curved canopy from below, and wide shots from across the plaza all produce portfolio-worthy images.

Photo tip: Overcast days create even lighting eliminating harsh shadows on white surfaces. Midday sun causes severe exposure challenges.
3

Old City Narrow Lanes

๐Ÿ“ธ Early morning (8-10AM)Street photography

The labyrinthine alleys of Icheri Sheher with their worn cobblestones, ancient stone walls, hanging laundry, and occasional glimpses of the Caspian at lane ends are classic street photography territory. Almost entirely empty before 9AM.

Photo tip: Enter through the Qosha Qalanฤฑn (Double Gate) from Neftchilar Ave and head immediately left into the older, less-photographed northern section.
4

Sheki Khan's Palace Interior

๐Ÿ“ธ 11AM-1PM (midday sun through windows)Interior/Architectural detail

The extraordinary shebeke stained-glass windows create rainbow light patterns when midday sun shines directly through. Close-up details of individual geometric panels and wide shots of entire decorated walls are both stunning.

Photo tip: Bring a tripod โ€” the interior is beautiful but dim requiring longer exposures for clean shots without grain.
5

Gobustan Petroglyphs at Sunrise

๐Ÿ“ธ Sunrise (30 min after first light)Landscape/Heritage

The ancient rock carvings reveal maximum detail under low-angle morning light that creates shadows within the carved lines. Wide shots showing the alien semi-desert landscape with carved boulders scattered to the horizon at golden hour.

Photo tip: The site opens at 10AM officially but early arrivals before opening can often walk the outer areas freely. Come at dawn for the best light.
6

Bibi-Heybat Mosque at Sunset

๐Ÿ“ธ SunsetArchitecture/Religious

The turquoise and gold domes of the Bibi-Heybat Mosque with the Caspian Sea behind create stunning compositions when the setting sun lights the domes from the west. Reflections of the mosque in the water features at the complex add to the drama.

Photo tip: Shoot from the northeastern corner of the mosque complex for the best angle combining domes, sea, and sunset sky.
7

Mud Volcanoes Landscape

๐Ÿ“ธ Overcast or dramatic stormy skyLandscape/Nature

The gray moonscape of the Gobustan mud volcanoes is one of the most otherworldly landscapes in the world. Overcast skies with dramatic clouds enhance the alien atmosphere. Long exposures at sunset extend the tonalities in the gray mud.

Photo tip: Wear boots you don't mind ruining โ€” the gray mud is extremely sticky. Wide-angle lens essential for capturing the scale of the field.
