Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria, serving simultaneously as a federal state. One of Europe's most culturally rich capitals, Vienna was the seat of the Habsburg dynasty for centuries and remains a global center for music, art, architecture, and intellectual life. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Top beaches

A ranked editor’s shortlist of the coastline worth planning a day around in Vienna.

  1. Danube Island (Donauinsel)

A 21.1km artificial island in the Danube created in the 1980s as flood protection, now Vienna's main outdoor recreation area. Free access with sandy banks, swimming areas, cycling paths, beach bars, and FKK (nudist) sections. Hosts the massive Donauinselfest (free music festival, June).

  2. Old Danube (Alte Donau)

A 5km oxbow lake separated from the main Danube, popular for swimming, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and rowing. Calmer and warmer water than the main Danube. The Gänsehäufel island bathing facility is here.

  3. Gänsehäufel

A large island bathing and leisure facility on the Old Danube, one of the largest inland beaches in Europe. Facilities include sandy beach areas, pools, restaurants, saunas, and extensive sunbathing lawns. A Viennese institution since 1907.

    Editor’s tip. V

  4. Strandbad Alte Donau

A traditional Viennese lakeside bathing facility on the Old Danube, with grass sunbathing areas, a sandy beach section, and direct water access for swimming and water sports.

  5. Krapfenwaldlbad

An open-air swimming pool perched in the Vienna Woods on the slopes of the Nussberg hill, offering stunning panoramic views over Vienna. A very scenic swim with the city as a backdrop.

  6. Copa Cagrana / Copa Beach (Donauinsel)

The southern tip of the Danube Island near the Reichsbrücke bridge has a cluster of beach bars and clubs known as Copa Cagrana. Sandy areas, outdoor bars, concerts, and a lively summer scene.

Beach safety

Hard-earned guidance — read this before you swim, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the coast.

Critical

Swim where lifeguards are posted and follow flag warnings — green is safe, yellow is caution, red means no swimming. Rip currents are the leading beach hazard worldwide.

Caution

Watch for tide changes and marine life — jellyfish blooms, sea urchins on rocky entries, occasional shark or stingray advisories. Don’t swim alone, especially at dawn or dusk.

Tip

Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes and after every swim. Take shade between 11 am and 3 pm — the sun is harsher than people expect, even when the air is cool.

Practical

Keep valuables out of sight or back at the accommodation. Beach theft is a small-but-real risk at busy beaches; never leave bags unattended while you’re in the water.
