Café Central

Café Central is one of Vienna's grandest traditional coffeehouses, occupying the ground floor of the former Bank and Stock Exchange building on Herrengasse since 1876. Its palatial interior, with vaulted Neo-Gothic arches, marble columns, and a life-size statue of the poet Peter Altenberg seated near the entrance, recalls the era when the café was a meeting point for Vienna's intellectual and political circles, including Trotsky and Freud among its documented regulars. The menu follows classic coffeehouse conventions, with Viennese melange and other coffee specialties served on silver trays alongside apple strudel, Sachertorte, and a full pastry case. A pianist plays live most afternoons and evenings, adding to the old-world atmosphere. Because of its fame, the café draws heavy tourist traffic and queues can form outside, particularly around midday and in high season, though turnover is generally fast and locals still use it for reading newspapers or working over a single coffee. No reservations are taken for casual visits; large groups may inquire about advance arrangements.
