Yerevan

Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, a rose-tuff city of about 1.1 million people set at roughly 900-1,300 m above sea level on the Hrazdan River, with snow-capped Mount Ararat visible across the Turkish border on clear days. Founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC, it combines Soviet-era neoclassical planning around Republic Square, the Cascade arts complex, the Matenadaran manuscript library, the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial, outdoor cafes, brandy cellars and a growing wine-bar scene. Visitors come for Armenian food and hospitality, very low prices by European standards, and easy day trips to Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap, Echmiadzin and Lake Sevan.

About Yerevan

Yerevan sits on a plateau ringed by the Ararat Valley, the Kotayk hills and, on clear days, the twin peaks of Mount Ararat. The centre is a compact grid laid out by architect Alexander Tamanyan in the 1920s, with a ring boulevard around the Kentron district, pink and orange tuff buildings, and Republic Square with its evening fountain show at the core. From the square, Northern Avenue leads to the Cascade, a giant limestone staircase with the Cafesjian Center for the Arts and views to Ararat, while Mashtots Avenue leads uphill to the Matenadaran, one of the world's richest collections of ancient manuscripts. The Vernissage weekend market, the GUM market, the Blue Mosque, the Opera and Ballet Theatre and the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial round out the main sights. Food is a draw in its own right: lavash bread, khorovats (barbecue), dolma, khash, harissa, lahmajun and Ararat brandy, with a fast-improving local wine scene using indigenous grapes such as Areni. Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, so visitors arrive by air to Zvartnots or overland from Georgia or Iran, and the Armenian-Georgian border at Bagratashen is the most used road crossing. A relaxed pace, strong tourist infrastructure for a small capital, and one of the lowest daily costs in Europe and the Caucasus make Yerevan a good base for a week.

Best time Shoulder Worth avoiding

Average daytime temperature in °C.

Late spring and early autumn bring warm, dry, clear days of about 18-26 C (64-79 F), apricot and cherry season in June, grape and pomegranate harvest in September-October, and the clearest views of Mount Ararat in the early morning.

Winter is cheap and quiet, with fewer visitors and Christmas-season markets, but days stay near freezing; Mount Ararat is often hidden in summer haze, so the autumn and winter mornings give the best views.

Essential travel tips

  • Download Yandex Go and GG Taxi before arrival and use in-app prices instead of street taxis; the airport taxi counter and touts in Arrivals charge much more.
  • Carry some cash in dram for markets, marshrutkas and small cafes, although cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops in Kentron.
  • Buy a local SIM (Ucom, Team/Viva-MTS or Beeline kiosks are in Arrivals at Zvartnots) for about 3,000-5,000 AMD (~$8-14) for a 10-15 GB package; bring the passport.
  • Mount Ararat is clearest in the early morning and after rain; check from the Cascade top terrace or Victory Park before breakfast.
  • Pay the metro and bus with a contactless bank card or Apple Pay/Google Pay: paper tickets were withdrawn in August 2025, and VTB-issued cards are not accepted on the system.
  • Book day trips to Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap and Lake Sevan in advance in July and August, and carry a scarf or shawl for churches and monasteries.
  • Only the Georgian (Bagratashen, Gogavan-Sadakhlo) and Iranian (Agarak-Nrduz) land borders are open to travellers; the Azerbaijani and Turkish borders are closed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Yerevan?

Citizens of the US, the UK, the EU/Schengen states, Canada, Australia, Japan, the UAE, Qatar and many other countries enter visa-free with a valid passport and may stay up to 180 days in a one-year period (the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets the list at mfa.am/en/visa). A temporary exemption also lets nationals of about 111 countries enter without a visa if they hold a valid residence permit from the US, an EU/Schengen state, the UK or certain Gulf states, provided the permit is valid for at least six months on arrival (the ministry page gives the period as 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2027). Other nationalities apply for an e-visa at evisa.mfa.am (valid 21 days) or a visitor visa of up to 120 days, extendable by up to 60 days; some nationalities need an invitation arranged through e-request.am. Rules change, so check mfa.am/en/visa or email visa@mfa.am with the passport number before flying.

How many days are enough for Yerevan?

Two full days cover Republic Square, the Cascade, the Matenadaran, Tsitsernakaberd and a brandy tour; four to five days add Garni and Geghard, Khor Virap and Echmiadzin, and a week allows Lake Sevan, Dilijan and Areni wine country.

Is Yerevan safe for tourists?

Yes. Street crime and violent crime against visitors are low, and solo travellers including women report few problems. Avoid demonstrations and do not go to the Azerbaijan border region; check the US travel.state.gov advisory before travelling.

What currency does Yerevan use and how much does a meal cost?

Armenian dram (AMD), about 365 AMD per US dollar in autumn 2026. A bakery meal costs about 700-1,500 AMD (~$2-4), a local sit-down meal 2,500-5,000 AMD (~$7-14), and a mid-range restaurant dinner 6,000-12,000 AMD (~$16-33).

How do I get from Zvartnots Airport to the centre?

Take express bus 100 (300 AMD, ~40-60 minutes, every 30 minutes from 07:00 to 22:00) or order a Yandex Go or GG Taxi in the app for about 2,000-4,000 AMD (~$5.50-11) for the 12 km trip of 20-30 minutes.
