Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, a rose-tuff city of about 1.1 million people set at roughly 900-1,300 m above sea level on the Hrazdan River, with snow-capped Mount Ararat visible across the Turkish border on clear days. Founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC, it combines Soviet-era neoclassical planning around Republic Square, the Cascade arts complex, the Matenadaran manuscript library, the Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial, outdoor cafes, brandy cellars and a growing wine-bar scene. Visitors come for Armenian food and hospitality, very low prices by European standards, and easy day trips to Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap, Echmiadzin and Lake Sevan.
- Public
- Yerevan runs a one-line metro, municipal buses, trolleybuses and minibuses on one unified fare of 150 AMD (~$0.41) per ride, payable by contactless bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, transport card or Telcell Wallet.

Transport tips
Travel smarter, not harder.
Pay the metro and buses with a contactless bank card (all local banks except VTB), Apple Pay or Google Pay; paper QR tickets were withdrawn in August 2025.
A 90-minute ticket (3 trips) costs about 280-300 AMD and a daily package (8 trips) about 880-900 AMD; online prices are the lower figure.
Download Yandex Go and GG Taxi before arrival.
Use express bus 100 (300 AMD) from Zvartnots Airport.
Cross roads carefully; drivers do not always yield.
Carry small dram notes for minibuses on routes that do not accept cards.
Check the Gai bus stand and Kilikia Central Bus Station for day-trip departures.
Avoid unlicensed cars and drivers who approach you in Arrivals.
