Beach in Southern shore of Lake Sevan near Martuni, Armenia

Shorzha Beach

Scenic and uncrowded90 km from Yerevan

A relatively undiscovered stretch of Lake Sevan's southern shore offering dramatic mountain backdrops and fewer crowds than the northwest. The clear water and mountain scenery make this one of the most photogenic beach spots on the lake. Suitable for swimming and kayaking.

Shorzha Beach lies along Lake Sevan's southern shore near the town of Martuni, approximately 90 kilometres from Yerevan. It is one of the least discovered stretches of Armenia's most celebrated lake — a wide, open beach with dramatic mountain panoramas that has retained a genuinely unspoiled character compared to the developed northwest shore.

The shoreline at Shorzha is primarily pebbly and open, without the organised commercial infrastructure of the Sevan town beaches. The lake water here maintains the exceptional clarity found throughout Sevan, with a deep blue-turquoise colour that intensifies towards the centre of the lake. Water temperatures follow the same pattern as the rest of Sevan's shoreline — cold even at the height of summer, rarely exceeding 18°C due to the lake's 1,900-metre altitude. The beach faces north across the open expanse of the lake, and afternoon winds from the northwest can create mild chop, though strong surf is not characteristic of this sheltered southern margin.

The surrounding landscape provides the most compelling reason to visit Shorzha over more popular alternatives. The Vardenis and Geghama mountain ranges frame the horizon, with snow-capped peaks remaining visible from the shore into June and occasionally beyond. This mountain backdrop gives the beach a dramatic alpine-lake quality that distinguishes it from more conventional destinations. Photography is productive here at most hours of the day, with the combination of clear water, pebble shore, and mountain skyline offering strong compositional material.

Facilities are minimal — a natural shoreline with limited infrastructure, a basic parking area beside the lake road, and sparse food options in Martuni town a few kilometres distant. There are no lifeguards. Kayaking is feasible from the shore for visitors who bring their own equipment. The absence of commercial development means visitors encounter few other tourists, particularly outside July and August.

Access from Yerevan involves the M2 motorway south and the H45 road along the lake's southern margin; the drive takes approximately two hours. Public transport to the southern shore is infrequent and impractical for day trips without a private vehicle. Visitors combining Shorzha with Martuni town or the Sevanavank area should plan a full day.

FAQ

Is Shorzha Beach a good choice for photography?

Yes — the combination of clear blue lake water, pebble shore, and the Vardenis and Geghama mountain ranges in the background creates strong photographic conditions. Morning light from the east is particularly effective, illuminating the peaks and lake surface simultaneously.

How far is Shorzha Beach from Yerevan?

Approximately 90 kilometres, with a drive time of around two hours via the M2 motorway and the H45 southern lake road. Public transport to the southern shore is infrequent, making a private vehicle the practical option.

Are there swimming facilities or lifeguards at Shorzha?

There are no lifeguards and facilities are minimal. The beach is natural and largely undeveloped. Visitors should be confident, self-sufficient swimmers and bring all equipment, food, and water they require for the visit.

Can visitors kayak from Shorzha Beach?

The open pebble shore provides a practical launch point for kayaking on the lake. Visitors must bring their own equipment, as there are no hire facilities at the beach. Conditions are generally calm in the morning before afternoon winds pick up.

Accessibility

No accessible facilities, ramps, or beach wheelchairs are documented at Shorzha Beach. The approach from the roadside parking area to the waterline is on uneven pebble terrain, presenting significant obstacles for visitors with mobility limitations.

When to visit

July and August provide the warmest conditions for swimming, with water temperatures reaching 16–18°C. June is excellent for viewing snow on the surrounding peaks alongside an already swimmable lake. The beach is relatively uncrowded throughout the season by Lake Sevan standards.
