The Cascade Complex

2-3 hours Adult: Free outdoor, museum 1,000 AMD · Child: Free

A massive stairway made of white travertine with 572 steps connecting downtown Yerevan to the Monument neighborhood. Houses the Cafesjian Center for the Arts featuring modern sculptures and offers panoramic views of the city and Mount Ararat. Each terrace features fountains, sculptures, and art installations.

The Cascade Complex is Yerevan's most dramatic public landmark — a monumental stairway of 572 white limestone steps climbing from the pedestrian zone of Tamanyan Street to the Monument neighborhood at the city's upper edge. Conceived in the 1970s under Soviet urban planners but never fully completed as originally intended, the Cascade stretches across the hillside as both a public park and a cultural institution. The terraces between each flight of stairs are landscaped with fountains, pools, and an ever-growing collection of outdoor sculptures by international artists, including notable works by Fernando Botero and Lynn Chadwick that are displayed year-round at no charge.

Inside the lower half of the structure, escalators and gallery corridors form the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, a contemporary art museum established with the collection and funding of Gerard Cafesjian, an Armenian-American philanthropist. The museum's permanent and rotating collections span modern and contemporary works across five gallery levels, connected by glass escalators that also provide an indoor step-free route to the upper terraces for those who prefer not to climb the outdoor staircase. Admission to the indoor galleries requires a separate ticket purchased at the main entrance on Tamanyan Street.

Outside, the terraces are free to roam at any hour. Outdoor sculptures are visible from dawn to dusk and the complex is lit in the evenings, making it a popular night-time destination. The best views of Mount Ararat and the Yerevan skyline open from the upper platform, approximately 300 meters of elevation above the starting point. On exceptionally clear mornings in autumn and winter, Ararat's twin peaks appear in sharp relief above the low city rooftops.

The Cascade is a social hub as much as a tourist attraction, popular with Yerevan residents for morning exercise walks, evening strolls, and weekend photography. Coffee kiosks and a restaurant operate on the lower terraces. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the outdoor stairs are steep; the indoor escalators offer a practical alternative. A complete outdoor ascent and descent takes 30–45 minutes at a relaxed pace, while exploring the Cafesjian galleries adds 1–2 hours. The surrounding neighborhood of smaller galleries, wine bars, and boutiques in the streets below makes the area worth a half-day visit.
