Erebuni Fortress
Ancient Urartian fortress dating to 782 BC, marking the founding of Yerevan and making it older than Rome. The archaeological site includes excavated walls, palace remains, and cuneiform inscriptions. Adjacent museum displays artifacts found at the site including pottery, weapons, and jewelry from the Urartian civilization.
Erebuni Fortress sits on Arin Berd hill in the southeastern outskirts of Yerevan, roughly 3km from the city center, and represents one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Caucasus. Founded in 782 BC by Urartian king Argishti I, the fortress gave Yerevan its name — 'Yerevan' is derived from 'Erebuni' through nearly 3,000 years of phonetic evolution. This makes Yerevan older than Rome by approximately a century.
The hilltop fortress covers an area of roughly 40 hectares and preserves the footprint of an Urartian administrative and military center. Excavations have revealed a palace complex, a columned hall that once held royal audiences, storerooms for grain and wine, and a temple to the Urartian god Haldi. Sections of the massive mud-brick walls still stand several meters high, and cuneiform inscription panels in the original Urartian script are visible in situ at the site. The excavated terrain is open to walk through, and several interpretation panels explain the function of each excavated area.
The adjacent Erebuni Historical and Archaeological Museum at the foot of the hill houses the best collection of finds from the site: painted pottery, bronze weapons and tools, iron arrowheads, cylinder seals, jewelry, and faience ornaments. Well-labeled displays in Armenian and English explain Urartian society, military organization, and craft production. The museum and hilltop site are operated together; a single combined ticket covers both.
A full visit including the hill and museum takes 1.5 hours. The hilltop offers clear views across the Ararat plain and toward Mount Ararat on clear days. There is minimal shade on the exposed hill, and summer midday visits can be uncomfortably hot. Early morning or late afternoon visits in summer are strongly preferable. Comfortable flat shoes are advisable as the hillside paths and excavated surfaces are uneven throughout.
