PenÃnsula Valdés
This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the world's premier marine wildlife destinations. Witness southern right whales (June-December), enormous elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, and orcas hunting sea lions on the beach.
Península Valdés is a large headland in Chubut Province in Argentine Patagonia, connected to the mainland by a narrow 35-kilometer isthmus and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 for the exceptional density and diversity of its marine wildlife populations. The peninsula's remote beaches and coastal cliffs shelter some of the largest concentrations of southern right whales, southern elephant seals, Magellanic penguins, and South American sea lions in the Southern Hemisphere.
The small port of Puerto Pirámides on the western coast is the primary base for whale-watching operations. Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) arrive in the sheltered gulfs flanking the peninsula — Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José — from June onward to calve and mate, remaining through November or early December. The proximity of mothers and calves to the shore makes Península Valdés one of the best places in the world to observe right whales at close range from rigid inflatable whale-watching boats. The spectacle includes breaching, tail-slapping, and whales that occasionally approach boats directly.
At Punta Norte — the northeastern tip of the peninsula — a large colony of southern elephant seals hauls out year-round, with the most dramatic activity during pupping season in September and October. The same beach is famous for the extraordinary behavior of orcas that intentionally strand themselves on the beach to snatch sea lion pups from the shallows — a phenomenon documented since the 1970s and best observed in February and March.
The Caleta Valdés estuary on the peninsula's eastern coast hosts a substantial Magellanic penguin colony alongside elephant seals, accessible via park roads. Punta Tombo, 180 kilometers south of Puerto Madryn, hosts the largest Magellanic penguin colony outside the Falkland Islands and is often included in extended Valdés itineraries.
The city of Puerto Madryn, 77 kilometers from the peninsula entrance, serves as the regional tourism hub with hotels, restaurants, and tour operators offering full-day and multi-day excursions. A park entry ticket is required for all visitors, purchased at the isthmus gate.

FAQ
When is the best time to visit Península Valdés?
The peninsula offers outstanding wildlife year-round, but peak experiences depend on the species. Southern right whales are present June to December, with September and October optimal. Orca strandings occur February to April. Elephant seals are present year-round with maximum activity during September-October pupping season.
Do I need to hire a guide or join a tour?
Independent access by rental car from Puerto Madryn is possible with a park entry ticket. However, whale-watching boat trips from Puerto Pirámides require booking with licensed operators. Full-day tour packages from Puerto Madryn combining whale watching and multiple land wildlife sites are the most common and convenient option.
Is photography feasible from the viewing areas?
A telephoto lens of at least 200mm is recommended for land-based photography at Punta Norte and the penguin colonies. Whale-watching boats position very close to the animals, making shorter telephoto or even wide-angle shots usable. Sea conditions affect boat stability and image sharpness.
Accessibility
The main viewing platform at Punta Norte and the whale-watching dock at Puerto Pirámides have basic facilities for mobility-impaired visitors. Park roads are unsealed gravel best navigated in a high-clearance vehicle. Boarding whale-watching inflatable boats requires stepping down into a moving craft, which is challenging for visitors with significant mobility limitations.
When to visit
September to November combines peak southern right whale activity, elephant seal pupping, and generally milder Patagonian weather. June to August sees the first whales arrive with far fewer tourists. February to April is the only window for observing orca strandings at Punta Norte.
