Voted the world's most beautiful bookstore, this Buenos Aires landmark occupies a converted 1919 theater with original features. Browse books beneath ornate ceiling frescoes and balcony boxes, or sip coffee on the former stage.

El Ateneo Grand Splendid is one of the world's most celebrated bookstores, occupying a historic theater in Buenos Aires' Recoleta neighborhood that first opened in 1919. The building was constructed as the Grand Splendid theater, hosting opera performances, tango shows, and later serving as a cinema before being converted into a bookstore in 2000 by the Yenny-El Ateneo chain.

The building's original theatrical architecture has been preserved intact throughout the conversion. A painted ceiling fresco by Nazareno Orlandi spans the main vault, depicting allegorical figures in a late Belle Époque style. The original stage curtain, red damask boxes on multiple gallery levels, decorative plasterwork, and two ornate proscenium arches remain in place. Bookshelves line the former orchestra stalls and fill what were once stage wings, while a café operates directly on the stage — visitors can order coffee and pastries and read while seated on the exact boards where tango was once performed.

The collection spans multiple floors connected by the original staircase. Argentine and Latin American literature occupies significant shelf space, alongside sections for history, science, art, and a dedicated area for books in English. Upper balcony boxes have been converted into alcoves where visitors can read in privacy, looking down over the main floor below. The bookstore hosts regular literary events, author signings, and readings in the ground-floor space.

No advance booking or tickets are required to enter. Visitors flow continuously through the building, and peak hours on weekends can make the ground floor uncomfortably crowded. Weekday mornings between 9 am and 11 am are the quietest periods, when readers occupy the box alcoves and the café fills slowly. The building's scale accommodates large numbers without losing the sense of intimacy in the upper-level boxes.

Photography is freely permitted throughout the space, and the theatrical architecture makes it one of the most frequently photographed interiors in Buenos Aires. The café on stage is a popular subject; the best overhead shot of the main floor is taken from the first gallery level.
