Calafate Mountain Park

3-4 hours Adult: $35 · Child: $20

This adventure park near El Calafate offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Argentino and surrounding glaciers. Activities include chairlifts, hiking trails, a 4x4 tour, and a museum about Patagonian wildlife.

Calafate Mountain Park is a scenic adventure and interpretation destination located 23 kilometres south of El Calafate on Ruta Provincial 11 in Santa Cruz Province, Patagonia. The park sits on the slopes above the southern shore of Lake Argentino — one of the largest lakes in Argentina — and offers one of the most panoramic viewpoints of the Patagonian landscape available without a multi-day trek: on clear days visitors can see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the peaks above Perito Moreno Glacier, and the vivid turquoise expanse of the lake stretching to the horizon.

The centrepiece activity is the chairlift, which carries visitors from the base area at lake level up to a summit viewpoint approximately 600 metres above. The ascent through native Patagonian scrub provides increasingly expansive views, with the snowcapped peaks of the Andes appearing over the park's ridge as the chair rises. At the summit, a network of short hiking trails fans out across the ridge, passing endemic calafate berry bushes — the purple-fruited shrub from which the town takes its name — and offering 360-degree views on cloudless days.

The park also includes a wildlife interpretation centre featuring bilingual panels on Patagonian fauna including pumas, Andean condors, guanacos, and foxes. A 4x4 excursion route extends to a higher lookout point beyond the chairlift summit for visitors seeking a more active experience. The summit restaurant serves Patagonian lamb dishes and local craft beer during a set lunch service between noon and 3 p.m.

Calafate Mountain Park is most commonly visited on the day of arrival or departure as a half-day complement to the full-day Perito Moreno Glacier excursion. The park is privately operated and admission includes the chairlift. Patagonian winds can close the lift on blustery days, so checking conditions before the drive out is advisable.
