Hiking trail in Ordino Arcalís area, Ordino, Andorra
Estanys de Tristaina Circuit
A spectacular circuit connecting three glacial lakes (Estany del Mig, Primer, and de Baix) above 2,300m near Ordino Arcalís ski resort. One of Andorra's most photogenic hikes with consistently beautiful scenery.
The Estanys de Tristaina Circuit is widely regarded as one of Andorra's most scenic shorter hikes, connecting three glacial lakes — Estany del Primer, Estany del Mig, and Estany de Baix — at elevations between 2,300 and 2,360 metres in the parish of Ordino. The trailhead is located at the Ordino Arcalís ski resort car park, reached by driving the CG-3 north from Ordino village through La Cortinada and Arans, then ascending the mountain road to the resort. The car park is free, though the resort access road may be gated outside ski season; confirming access in early or late summer is advisable.
The circuit covers approximately 8 kilometres with 450 metres of elevation gain, taking three to four hours to complete at a comfortable pace. The path begins behind the ski resort facilities and climbs through open alpine meadow on a well-marked trail. Estany del Primer is reached within 45 minutes at approximately 2,310 metres. The circuit continues in a clockwise direction, traversing a rocky saddle between the lakes before descending to Estany del Mig and then Estany de Baix, the lowest of the three. The return leg drops back to the resort car park along a gentler valley path.
The lakes sit in open glacially carved basins with almost no tree cover, providing unobstructed panoramic views to the Casamanya and Arcalís massifs. The reflections of the surrounding peaks in still lake water make this circuit exceptionally photogenic during calm morning conditions. Wildflowers carpet the meadows between the lakes in July, with Pyrenean buttercup, gentian, and edelweiss among the notable species. The trail surface is a mix of compacted gravel, short alpine grass, and exposed limestone rock on the saddle crossings between lakes. The exposed basins above 2,300 metres channel strong valley winds, and layers are advisable even on sunny days.

Tips
- Morning visits before 10am offer the best light for lake photography and the most reliable calm water for reflections.
- The saddle between Estany del Mig and Estany del Primer involves a short rocky step — use hands for stability on the steeper descent.
- Bring wind layers; the exposed lake basins above 2,300m channel strong valley winds even on sunny summer days.
- Spring snow persists on the northern saddle crossings into June — check local conditions before visiting before mid-July.
- The circuit can be walked in either direction without difficulty; clockwise is conventional but the terrain is equal both ways.
FAQ
Is the Tristaina circuit suitable for children?
The circuit is appropriate for children aged 7 and above with basic hiking experience. The terrain is generally well-graded but the rocky saddle sections require care; young children should be supervised closely on these short scrambles.
Can the trailhead be reached without a car?
Public bus services run from Andorra la Vella to Ordino but do not extend to the Ordino Arcalís resort road. A car or taxi is the practical option for reaching the trailhead. Walking from Ordino village adds approximately 8km and 600m gain to the round trip.
Are the Tristaina lakes suitable for swimming?
Swimming is possible in the lakes during July and August when snowmelt slows and water temperatures rise marginally. The water remains very cold throughout the season and the lake beds are rocky — appropriate footwear for entry is recommended.
Is there any shelter or food on the circuit?
There are no staffed refuges or food services on the Tristaina circuit itself. The Ordino Arcalís resort facilities at the trailhead may have a café during the summer season, but this is not guaranteed outside ski season.
Accessibility
Not wheelchair accessible. The circuit involves rocky terrain, saddle crossings, and uneven mountain paths above 2,300m. Strollers cannot be used on any section. Not suitable for mobility-impaired visitors.
When to visit
Mid-July to mid-September is the optimal window when snow has cleared from the saddle crossings and the wildflower meadows are in full bloom. Clear mornings offer the best lake reflection photography before valley winds develop.
