Vallnord Pal-Arinsal Ski Resort

Full day Adult: $50-60 · Child: $35-45

Andorra's second-largest ski area offering 63 kilometers of varied slopes with a more intimate, family-friendly atmosphere than Grandvalira. Features excellent tree-lined runs, terrain parks, and some of the best powder skiing in Andorra after fresh snowfall.

Vallnord Pal-Arinsal is Andorra's second ski area, operating in the western parishes of the country around La Massana and covering 63 kilometres of marked runs across two interconnected sectors. While smaller than Grandvalira, Vallnord is regarded by many regulars as offering a more relaxed and characterful alternative: less crowded pistes, tree-lined runs that hold snow well on overcast days, and an après-ski atmosphere that feels more local than international.

The Pal sector, accessed from La Massana by gondola, is the larger and more family-oriented of the two. Its runs descend through pine and fir forest at middle elevations, offering natural protection from wind and strong sun that helps preserve snow quality. The terrain here is predominantly green and blue, making it the preferred choice for beginners and families with young children. The ski school has a strong reputation for children's instruction, with nursery facilities for children as young as three.

Arinsal, on the western side of the ridge, presents a more open mountain face with steeper slopes that attract intermediate and advanced skiers. The village of Arinsal has the livelier nightlife options of the two base areas, with several après-ski bars and restaurants along the main street. A free cable car links the Pal and Arinsal sectors across the ridge, allowing skiers to move between them without returning to the valley base.

The resort sits at elevations ranging from roughly 1,550 to 2,560 metres. Snowmaking covers a significant proportion of the skiable area, ensuring a viable season even in low-snowfall years. The ski season generally runs from December to early April, with exact dates dependent on conditions. Lift passes are priced below those at Grandvalira, making Vallnord an attractive option for budget-conscious skiers or those on multi-day stays.

Non-skiers can access the summit via gondola for mountain views and access to the Pal restaurant terrace. In summer, the area operates as a mountain bike and hiking destination with gondola uplift for those wishing to descend the trails.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Pal and Arinsal sectors?

Pal is larger and better suited to families and beginners, with gentle tree-lined slopes and a well-regarded ski school. Arinsal has steeper, more open terrain and a more active après-ski scene in its village. A free cable car connects the two sectors across the ridge.

Is Vallnord suitable for a beginner skier?

Yes — the Pal sector in particular has a large proportion of green and blue runs, and the ski school offers structured instruction from absolute beginners upward. Equipment hire is available at both base areas, and the nursery at Pal accepts children as young as three.

How crowded is Vallnord compared to Grandvalira?

Vallnord is noticeably less busy, particularly on weekdays. It attracts a higher proportion of local Andorran skiers and families. Weekend queues at the main lifts are generally short by Pyrenean resort standards, and the atmosphere throughout is more relaxed.

Accessibility

The gondola from La Massana to Pal can accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids. Adapted ski equipment is available through the ski school upon prior arrangement. The base areas at both Pal and Arinsal have largely level access to ticket offices, equipment hire shops, and restaurants.

When to visit

January and February offer the best snow depth and most reliable conditions. Weekday visits avoid the weekend influx from Barcelona and other Spanish cities. The Pal sector is especially pleasant in late February when days are longer and snow quality remains high.
