Algeria is North Africa's largest country, offering a stunning blend of Mediterranean coastline, ancient Roman ruins, and vast Saharan landscapes. From the UNESCO-listed Casbah of Algiers to the dramatic M'zab Valley and endless desert dunes, Algeria promises authentic cultural experiences and natural wonders largely untouched by mass tourism.
Algeria has three distinct climate zones: a Mediterranean coastal zone in the north with hot dry summers and mild wet winters; a semi-arid continental zone in the High Plateaus with cold winters and hot dry summers; and a hyper-arid Saharan zone covering 85% of the country where temperatures exceed 45°C in summer but drop below freezing on winter nights. The coastal north receives 400-800mm of rainfall annually while the Sahara receives under 25mm.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar-May
The ideal season for northern Algeria — mild temperatures (16-24°C), wildflowers blooming in the Atlas Mountains, and clear skies. Perfect for visiting Roman ruins, hiking in Djurdjura, and exploring the Casbah without oppressive heat.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Hot and dry across the north (28-35°C in Algiers); extreme heat in the Sahara (40-50°C). The Mediterranean coast is perfect for beach holidays; highland areas like Djurdjura remain comfortable. Sahara travel should be avoided.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
Second-best season for travel with temperatures dropping to comfortable levels (20-28°C in October), fewer crowds than spring, and occasional early rains refreshing the landscape. The Sahara begins cooling for desert trekking from October.
Winter
Months: Dec-Feb
Cool in the north (8-15°C), cold in mountain areas with snow possible, and perfect for Saharan travel (15-25°C daytime, below 0°C nights). Chréa National Park near Blida operates as Algeria's only ski resort with reliable snow.
