Blida (City of Roses)

50 km southwest of Algiers45 minutes by train or busby Train from Agha station in Algiers

Blida, known as the City of Roses for the fragrant gardens and citrus orchards blanketing the lower slopes of the Tell Atlas, lies 50 km southwest of Algiers and is reached in about 45 minutes by train from Algiers Agha station — one of the most scenic short rail journeys in Algeria. The train threads through suburban Algiers before climbing into the Atlas foothills, arriving at Blida's central station a short walk from the old town quarter. Grand taxis and ETUSA buses also serve the route, but the train is faster, cheaper, and more comfortable.

The old city retains a coherent Ottoman-era street plan of narrow lanes, historic mosques, and tiled fountains clustered around the Sidi Ahmed Kbaili mosque. The rose gardens and citrus plantations on the town's western edge are at their best in April and May, when the air carries a strong floral fragrance and local vendors sell rose-water and citrus preserves along the market streets. The covered central market is a good place to sample regional produce including figs, almonds, and the town's prized honey.

The main natural attraction is Chiffa Gorge, 15 km south of Blida on the road toward Medea. The gorge cuts through limestone cliffs above the Chiffa river and is home to a large population of wild Barbary macaques habituated to visitors; the animals are visible year-round along the road and in the picnic areas at the canyon bottom. Restaurants at the gorge entrance serve grilled meats and salads. Further up the mountain, above Blida, Chrea National Park protects the highest ridges of the Blida Atlas at over 1,600 metres. A cable car from the outskirts of town rises to the Chrea plateau, where cedar forests spread across the hillsides and walking trails lead through the trees. In winter the plateau operates as a modest ski resort. A full day from Algiers can comfortably include the old town and market in the morning, and Chiffa Gorge or the Chrea plateau in the afternoon.

Tips

  • Take the morning train from Algiers Agha station; an early departure reaches Blida before 9 a.m. and trains run frequently enough to return on the last evening service.
  • At Chiffa Gorge, do not feed the Barbary macaques — feeding is prohibited and the animals can bite if offered and then denied food.
  • The cable car to Chrea may be out of service on weekdays in low season; confirm locally or plan the visit for a weekend when it is more reliably operating.
  • Blida's central market is busiest Thursday through Saturday morning; arriving before 10 a.m. avoids the worst crowding at the produce stalls.
  • Carry a light jacket even in summer if heading to the Chrea plateau, where temperatures drop noticeably compared to the valley below.

FAQ

How long does the train from Algiers to Blida take?

The journey from Algiers Agha station to Blida takes approximately 45 minutes on the suburban rail service. Trains run frequently throughout the day and the fare is modest, making the train the most practical option for a day trip.

When is the best time to see the roses in Blida?

The rose-growing season peaks between April and mid-May, when the gardens and roadside plots surrounding the town are in full bloom and rose-water distilleries are active. Outside this window the town still has its citrus orchards, but the floral spectacle is much reduced.

Are the Barbary macaques at Chiffa Gorge dangerous?

The macaques in Chiffa Gorge are habituated to humans but remain wild animals. They are generally calm around visitors who do not carry or offer food. Bags of food should be kept closed and out of sight; attempting to handle the animals is strongly inadvisable.

Is the Chrea cable car operating year-round?

The cable car runs on a seasonal and maintenance schedule and may be closed on weekdays in low season. Visitors should verify locally at their accommodation or at the Blida station before planning the ascent to the Chrea plateau.

When to visit

April and May are the prime months, combining rose-garden bloom with warm but not oppressive temperatures and accessible hiking on the Chrea plateau. Winter suits visitors interested in skiing at Chrea, while summer heat in the valley makes midday sightseeing uncomfortable.
