The best hikes Cape Verde has to offer.
Pico do Fogo Summit Trail
expertCape Verde's ultimate hiking challenge ascends to the summit of Africa's most recently active volcano, which erupted in 2014-2015. The trail passes through eerie black lava fields before reaching the crater rim with 360-degree views over the Atlantic and neighboring islands on clear days.
Paul Valley Descent (Cova to Ribeira Grande)
moderateOne of Cape Verde's most spectacular hiking routes descends from the green rim of Cova crater through terraced farmland, coffee plantations, and traditional villages before reaching the dramatic gorge of Ribeira Grande. The landscape transitions from misty cloud forest to lush subtropical valley.
Serra Malagueta Cloud Forest Loop
moderateSantiago Island's highest nature reserve contains the last remnants of Cape Verde's endemic cloud forest, home to the rare Cape Verde warbler found nowhere else on earth. The trail winds through twisted dragon trees, tree heath, and offers sweeping views over the island's agricultural heartland.
Monte Verde Summit Trail
moderateSão Vicente's highest peak rewards hikers with extraordinary 360-degree views across Mindelo and the Atlantic on clear days, with neighboring Santo Antão visible just 17km away across the channel. The trail passes through the island's surprisingly diverse vegetation including endemic species.
Ribeira do Paul Valley Trail
easyThe most accessible and visually dramatic valley walk on Santo Antão follows an ancient ribeira (seasonal riverbed) path through lush banana plantations, sugarcane fields, and traditional villages. Impressive canyon walls rise hundreds of meters on either side throughout this gentle uphill route.
Fontainhas Cliff Path
challengingOne of Cape Verde's most dramatic coastal walks traverses a narrow cliff path high above the Atlantic between the village of Fontainhas and Ponta do Sol. The vertiginous route with sheer drops on one side and volcanic mountain walls on the other offers breathtaking ocean panoramas.
Tarrafal to Chão Bom Coastal Path
easyA gentle coastal walk between Tarrafal's palm-fringed beach and the neighboring community of Chão Bom, passing rocky volcanic outcrops, deserted coves, and traditional fishing settlements. The trail offers excellent opportunities to spot coastal seabirds and observe local fishing traditions.
Cha das Caldeiras Crater Rim Walk
challengingThis dramatic walk circles the interior rim of Fogo's massive crater, passing through the eerie landscape of the 2014-2015 lava flow that destroyed parts of Chã das Caldeiras village. Views from the rim encompass the entire inhabited crater, vineyards, and the looming Pico do Fogo summit above.
