🟢 Easy

Flat to gentle terrain, suitable for families and casual walkers. No technical skills required. Ribeira do Paul and the Tarrafal coastal path fall into this category. Good footwear recommended but not essential.

🟡 Moderate

Some elevation gain, uneven terrain, and 2-4 hours of walking required. Reasonable fitness needed. Serra Malagueta and Monte Verde trails are examples. Hiking boots and water essential.

🟠 Challenging

Significant elevation changes, steep sections, and 4+ hours duration. Good fitness and hiking boots required. Fontainhas cliff path and Chã das Caldeiras rim walk require care on loose volcanic rock.

🔴 Expert

Technical volcanic terrain, extreme elevation, and full-day commitment. Pico do Fogo summit requires mandatory guide, excellent fitness, and appropriate gear. Not suitable for beginners or those with altitude concerns.

Best Time to Hike

🌸 Spring

March to May — excellent conditions with mild temperatures and low humidity. Ideal for all trails including Pico do Fogo. Whale watching season coincides nicely with spring hiking.

☀️ Summer

June to August — hot and dry on lower elevations (30°C+). Higher trails like Serra Malagueta remain comfortable. Rainy season begins late August bringing dramatic cloud formations and greener landscapes.

🍂 Fall

September to November — best for landscape photography as rains bring lush greenery. Cooler temperatures perfect for strenuous trails. Santo Antão's valleys are at their most photogenic.

❄️ Winter

December to February — peak hiking season with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Harmattan dust haze occasionally reduces summit visibility. Best time for Pico do Fogo summit attempt.
