Money-Saving Tips

Stretch your budget further with these insider tips.

đź’ˇ

Travel in July-October (low season) for 30-50% cheaper accommodation and uncrowded beaches — the weather is hotter but still pleasant for beach activities

đź’ˇ

Use aluguer (shared minibus taxis) instead of private taxis — shared transport costs $1-3 versus $10-20 for private rides between the same points

đź’ˇ

Eat cachupa and local dishes at neighborhood restaurants away from the tourist strip — the same quality food costs half the price. A cachupa meal costs $7-12 locally versus $18-25 at tourist restaurants

đź’ˇ

Self-cater using Intermarché and local supermarkets for breakfast and lunch — save restaurant dining for evenings. Groceries are inexpensive with Portuguese supermarket chains operating on Sal and Santiago

đź’ˇ

Book accommodation directly with hotels rather than through third-party platforms — many guesthouses offer 10-15% discounts for direct bookings paid in cash on arrival

đź’ˇ

Inter-island ferry is dramatically cheaper than flights: Sal to Boa Vista by fast ferry costs $20-30 versus $70-100 by plane

Free & Cheap Activities

Experience Cape Verde without spending a fortune.

Free

Santa Maria Beach

Cape Verde's most popular beach on Sal Island is completely free with access to swimming, beach walks, and stunning sunset views over the Atlantic. The long wooden pier is perfect for evening promenades.

Free

Mindelo Street Exploration

São Vicente's cosmopolitan capital has colorful colonial architecture, vibrant street art, and the charming Praça Amilcar Cabral — all free to explore. The waterfront Marginal promenade is one of Cape Verde's best evening strolls.

Free

Cidade Velha Heritage Walk (exterior)

The exterior of Africa's first colonial city — cobblestone streets, traditional houses, and ocean views — can be explored freely. Entry to the fort and cathedral ruins requires a ticket ($5) but the overall atmospheric historic town is free to wander.

Free

Pico do Fogo Viewpoints

The dramatic volcanic landscape of Fogo Island can be appreciated from free viewpoints around the crater rim. The hike to the summit requires a guide fee but the lower crater area and ChĂŁ das Caldeiras village can be explored freely.

Free

Sucupira Market (Praia)

Praia's enormous Sucupira Market is Cape Verde's most vibrant free spectacle — thousands of vendors, fresh produce, textiles, and street food stalls create an extraordinary sensory experience with no admission charge.

Free

Buracona Cliffs

The dramatic lava cliffs on Sal Island's northwest coast can be explored for free on a self-guided walk. The Blue Eye natural pool requires a small fee ($3) but the cliff walk and ocean views are completely free.

Free

Monte Verde (Lower Slopes)

SĂŁo Vicente's highest peak has free access to the lower hiking trails. The full summit trail requires minor fees at some sections but the lower slopes with excellent views toward Mindelo are freely accessible.

Free

Viana Desert Walk (Edge)

The outer edges of Boa Vista's spectacular Saharan-like desert can be approached on foot from Sal Rei. The deeper dune areas are best accessed by 4x4 tour, but the desert's dramatic entry is free to explore independently.

Free

Palmeira Fish Market

Sal Island's working fish market at Palmeira pier is a free and fascinating early morning spectacle where fishermen sell their Atlantic catch wholesale. Arrive by 6-7AM for maximum activity.

Free

Tarrafal Beach

Santiago Island's most beautiful beach is completely free, with palm trees, calm lagoon waters, and a traditional fishing village atmosphere. The 90-minute journey from Praia is the only cost.

Currency & Payment Tips

Essential information about money matters.

Currency

Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE). Approximately 100 CVE = $1 USD, 110 CVE = €1 EUR. The escudo is pegged to the euro.

Exchange euros at banks or official exchange offices in town centers for the best rates. Avoid airport currency exchange counters which offer significantly worse rates. Hotels also exchange but at poor rates.

ATMs

ATMs (Caixa Automático) available on Sal, Santiago, Boa Vista, and São Vicente. Less common on smaller islands. Banco Comercial do Atlântico and Caixa Económica ATMs most reliable. Withdraw larger amounts as ATM limits can be $200-300 per transaction. Notify your bank of travel to avoid card blocking.

Credit Cards

Visa and Mastercard accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and tourist businesses on Sal and Boa Vista. Smaller guesthouses, local restaurants, and markets are cash-only. Always carry escudos for local transactions.

Tipping

10% at tourist restaurants if not already added. Not expected at local cafes or simple restaurants. Taxi drivers: round up the fare. Hotel housekeeping: 100-200 CVE ($1-2) per day.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

  • EASE pre-registration fee — mandatory online registration before arrival costs approximately €15-25 per person depending on nationality
  • Departure tax — included in most flight tickets but verify when booking budget carriers
  • Island ferry costs if visiting multiple islands — budget $20-30 per person per inter-island ferry crossing
  • Mandatory guide fees for Pico do Fogo summit hike — $20-35 per guide (not per person), required by law
  • Tourist taxes — some municipalities add $1-3/night accommodation tax not included in booking prices
  • Beach sunbed rental — $5-10/day at main tourist beaches, adds up over a week-long beach holiday
  • Bottled water — tap water is not potable on any island; budget $2-3/day for bottled water per person
