Estany de Juclar

5-6 hours round trip Adult: Free · Child: Free

Andorra's largest natural lake at 2,310 meters elevation, offering spectacular alpine scenery and crystal-clear waters surrounded by dramatic peaks. This glacial lake is the centerpiece of a popular hiking route through pristine mountain wilderness.

Estany de Juclar is Andorra's largest natural lake, sitting at 2,310 metres elevation in the Canillo Parish above the Incles Valley. Formed during the last Ice Age by glacial erosion, the lake occupies a dramatic cirque enclosed by rocky peaks that rise to over 2,800 metres. Its waters shift between deep turquoise and steel-grey depending on the light and season, and the surrounding landscape — boulder fields, low alpine shrubs, and seasonal wildflower patches — remains largely free of tourist infrastructure.

The standard approach begins at the Incles Valley trailhead, roughly two kilometres east of Soldeu. From the lower parking area, hikers follow a well-marked path that climbs steadily through conifer woodland before opening onto broad mountain meadows. The final ascent crosses a boulder-strewn ridge before the lake appears in the hollow below. The total elevation gain is approximately 680 metres, and the round trip typically takes five to six hours at a comfortable pace. A shorter variant is possible by driving a narrow track closer to the upper trailhead, reducing distance by around two kilometres.

At the lakeside, the main activities are picnicking, photography, and resting. In late July and August a small number of wild campers pitch tents near the shore, though official overnight camping requires a permit from Andorra's natural heritage authorities. Hardy visitors swim in the lake; the water is cold even at peak summer. The surrounding ridgelines offer additional scrambling for experienced hikers, and Juclar is often combined with a traverse to the neighbouring lakes higher in the cirque.

Weekends in July and August attract the largest crowds, when Andorran families and resort visitors combine the hike with a stay in Soldeu. Midweek mornings in mid-July represent the quietest window. Weather can deteriorate rapidly in the afternoon, making an early start essential. The trail closes to safe hiking roughly from November through May, when snowpack makes the upper section hazardous without crampons.
